Cari  AMICI

Dear Friends

Save the Date: 27-30 August and Join us at the Engineering Mechanics Institute International Conference 2023 (EMI IC 2023)—the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) international annual mechanics conference. This conference will be hosted at University of Palermo, Italy, with organization led by Professors Massimo Midiri and Antonina Pirrotta.

The conference will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners, where the fundamental and applied advances in engineering mechanics will be on display. At the conference, learn about the latest discoveries in the field of engineering mechanics, disseminate your own contributions at topical sessions,  listen to distinguished plenary lecturers and participate in discussions, panels and networking events to advance engineering mechanics education, research and practice.

But more, support all PHD students attending the special junior sessions where the chairs will be young researcher and speakers Ph D Students, only.

It could be very important, to let you know that with one registration fee you may present two papers!

Mini-Symposia and Session - Call for Proposals

Deadline for Submissions:

January 15, 2023 - mini-symposia proposals

February 25 , 2023 - abstracts

Mini-symposia proposals for the conference are being sought. They must include the following information:

  1. Title
  2. Names and contact information of the organizer(s)
  3. Abstract (1 paragraph)
  4. Sponsoring committee, if any
  5. Rough estimate of the anticipated number of presentations.
  6. Specify, if you are Assistant Professor and your MS is for Special Junior Session, inviting as speakers only PhD students, (the abstract may be co-authored with senior authors).

It is expected that the mini-symposia organized by the leaders in the field will particularly stimulate the event and give it its unique flavor. From an organizational point of view, we envision a mini-symposium to consist of one or more sessions of 6 time slots each (one time slot equals to 20 min. incl. discussions). Mini-symposia with 3 or more sessions may include a keynote lecture having allocated two time slots for the presentation (equals to 40 mins. incl. discussions).

Mini-symposia proposals are to be e-mailed to antonina.pirrotta@unipa.it  by January 15, 2023.

The Minisymposium "Multiscale Mechanics and Nanostructures" organized by GAMeN will be held within the Engineering Mechanics Institute International Conference 2023 (EMI IC 2023) - https://www.emi2023ic.com/. The conference will be hosted at University of Palermo, August 27-30, 2023.

Ultrasmall structures and multiscale materials are gaining lot of attention in the scientific community with the challenging purpose to design, model and characterize innovative systems and nano-devices. Non-conventional materials and small-scale structures are forefront topics in the field of Engineering and Material Science in which understanding of Solid and Structural Mechanics at different levels play a fundamental role to overcome the multiscale challenge and to explore potentialities of miniaturized and innovative systems. The Mini-symposium aims at providing new insights in modeling, analysis and design of small-scale systems, new-generation nanocomposites, multiscale materials and structures. Discovery and promotion of new knowledge about mechanical behaviours involving size effects as well as multiple characteristic scale lengths are highly encouraged. Recent achievements regarding unconventional responses of multiscale systems and nanostructures will be deeply investigated from theoretical, computational and experimental points of view.

The debate will focus on modeling and assessment of scale effects in nanostructures which is a ground breaking topic in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering with a wide range of applications concerning development of miniaturized electro-mechanical devices such as nano-sensors, nanoresonators, nano-actuators, nano-probes. Enriched and refined theories able to reproduce complex scale phenomena are required to capture size-dependent behaviours of such new generation systems. Time-dependent structural responses will be investigated by means of nonlocal theories of viscoelasticy involving fractional operators. Effects of random excitations on small-scale structures will be analysed thought stochastic approaches. Special attention will be devoted to the design and characterization of nanomaterials and to the assessment of effective constitutive properties of advanced composites. Modeling and design of unconventional materials and structures will be provided through the deepening of multiscale mechanics. Innovative systems ranging from multifunctional lattices to nanocomposites and their applications will be discussed.

Contributions related (but not limited) to the following topics are encouraged:
  • nonlocal continua
  • size- and time-dependent structural behaviours
  • fractional calculus in nonlocal mechanics
  • multiscale physic phenomena
  • advanced nanocomposites
  • micro- and nano-mechanics
  • multiscale composites and metamaterials
